![]() The “fire on the sea” that lends its name to the exhibition triggers a mental image of an event superimposing two elements (water and fire) and invites us to imagine what this proximity does to both. The philosopher Paul Virilio suggested that we may visit museums as much to see the works of art as to be seen by them: Appriou’s sculptures quite literally gaze at us with their large, wide-open eyes, influenced by 1990s horror films and David Bowie’s differently colored eyes (each eye being unique in its manufacture, the figures with two-or three-have different eyes). ![]() These balls form the pupil or, in some cases, a double pupil-clearly not an attempt at realism but located at the very heart of the universe the artist has built, which makes the gaze a central theme of this group of sculptures. Produced in collaboration with a glassmaker, the eyes are made of solid glass containing flecks of gold or colored glitter, with the addition of a suspended black ball (“like a galaxy suspended in the universe,” to use Appriou’s words). Appriou’s work conjures up an entire Pantheon, ranging from Greek mythology (Hades, Atlas, the Cyclops, a naiad) to Shakespearian prose (Ophelia), as well as a recollection of aesthetic experiences that have played a decisive role in his art: English Pre-Raphaelite painting, William Blake, Hieronymus Bosch, Odilon Redon… and ancient sculpture, from which he borrows the strategy of adding eyes to the sculpted bodies of his characters. Appriou continues to explore these inspirational realms in his art, all of which have one thing in common: the evocation of spaces he describes as “matrix-like.” These three worlds are, in fact, just that, each with a tendency to invoke stories, shapes, and figures. In modern Vorin belief, while the Double Eye doesn't seem to be actively used in worship, it is at least somewhat revered the Devotary of Purity, for instance, considers images of the Double Eye to be suitable for Shallan to draw. Khriss's summary of the Ten Essences and the Double Eye Īccording to Khriss, the Double Eye represents the creation of plants and animals on Roshar, though exactly what that means is not clear. This is also the basis for the hourglass shape that was often associated with the Knights Radiant. Bound together, these form the Double Eye of the Almighty, an eye with two pupils representing the creation of plants and creatures. “ The preceding list is an imperfect gathering of traditional Vorin symbolism associated with the Ten Essences. ![]() Each Surge is connected to the two adjacent ones and to the Essences corresponding to the two Radiant orders that have access to that Surge. In some depictions, smaller circles representing the ten Surges are also included, placed in a circle interleaved with the Essences. The name "Double Eye" comes from the particular placement of the Essences: Pulp and Sinew are placed close to the center of the shape, evoking two pupils in an eye formed by the remaining Essences. There are also additional lines connecting Talus to Blood and Air to Lucentia. Adjacent Essences in the sequence are connected by lines, as are opposite ones. ![]() The Essences are ordered in a loop such that any two adjacent Essences correspond to orders of the Knights Radiant that share a Surge. The core of the Double Eye of the Almighty is a set of ten circles (often thought of as "spheres" ) representing the Ten Essences along with lines connecting them.
