I □□□□ you follow your teammates/employees on social. The key to a fuller life is to find belonging outside of work first (and if you happen to find it at work, awesome!). Based on my multi-faceted identity and lived professional experience, I’ve learned that finding belonging solely at work is dangerous, despite what DEIB professionals would have you believe (they’re paid so that you don’t quit). When folks (yes even straight white men) can’t have their opinion heard because of their identity, we’ve reached a breaking point. I have no problem with (and have a record of) doing plenty of social justice work to build a better world but we have to draw the line at some point, especially when it comes to what is and isn’t appropriate for work. In fact, I think DEIB professionals need to take an oath modeled after the Hippocratic Oath doctors take. If your vocation centers around creating a safe space, you’re failing at your job when you push people away - yes even those with a different opinion. creating homogenous, inequitable, exclusive, and isolated organizations. Many of the folks we’ve deputized to bring community to our workplaces need guardrails before they go off the deep end. (I wish I was making this up!)ĭEIB is becoming a toxic slippery slope that needs boundaries. Some of them even go on unhinged woke rants and then, at the bottom of their post, tell you to lobby members of congress for their political cause. I am seeing many folks in the DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging) space compelled to jump on the anti-semitic (if you don’t think anti-zionism is the latest “hate the jews” form factor, move along) bandwagon.
